My Plan to Fix Oklahoma’s Insurance Problem
On day one we will start making changes to lower rates. We will create the most efficient and cutting edge P&C Actuarial Division in the country. All personal insurance rates will be reviewed and analyzed. I will set the guidelines. No longer will insurance companies just do what they want. Transparency and fairness will be our priority.
The Consumer Protection division will be unleashed. No longer will consumer complaints be an afterthought. I will enable staff to aggressively go after bad actors. The consumers faith in the Oklahoma Insurance Department has been lost and we will start to fix that on day one. No longer will insurance companies be allowed to not pay what they owe.
I will actively work with and recruit new companies to enter the state insurance market.
We will improve health insurance pricing through fraud enforcement, federal partnerships and grants.
I will beef up fraud investigations. Insurance companies that play by the rules deserve to have a fair playing field.
I will pursue any and all grants and programs to work with consumers to strengthen roofs and create building codes that fortify homes to ensure Oklahomans have the best built homes that can stand up to Oklahoma weather.
We will have our own in-house catastrophe modeling department. This will allow the OID to be proactive regarding storm claims. This data will be available to all insurance companies in the state, resulting in lower costs and lower rates.
I will meet regularly with all legislators on relevant insurance committees to lay out both my priorities and to hear their questions and concerns so that we can work together to fix the insurance issues that plague Oklahoma consumers.
My legislative priorities are simple:
expand HB3781 to a true File and Use system with a 60 day filing period
make Mediation mandatory if requested by either party - this will dramatically reduce lawsuits and thus cost, while improving consumers claims experience
work towards a windstorm/reinsurance plan to help mitigate storm losses
improve reporting and enforcement of uninsured motorists laws
strengthen laws related to distracted driving
fix medical billing transparency
make third party lawsuit financing illegal
tighten the rules surrounding expenses that can be used in rating - Oklahomans should not have to pay higher rates to allow companies to name professional sports stadiums in other states or own a company jet
require out of state roofing companies to be bonded, insured and licensed - it is time to stop bad out of state actors taking advantage of Oklahomans and their insurance companies
I will be available to the policyholders of Oklahoma. I want to hear from you. This job is simple, the Insurance Commissioner is an Advocate for the four million people who live in Oklahoma. I have your back. You will have Affordable rates, Acceptable and Fair Claims, and we will work to ensure that insurance is Available to buy when you need it in your life.
